Where is Ta'ameya located in Brisbane?

Ta'ameya is at Spencer Lane, Brisbane City QLD 4000, a short walk from Eagle, Queen, Mary, Charlotte, Elizabeth and Edward Streets, in The laneway next to Spencer Coffee Bar. Open in Google Maps.

What are Ta'ameya's opening hours?

Ta'ameya is open Monday to Saturday, 11am to 2pm. We are closed on Sundays and public holidays. Hours are the same every week, so you can plan your lunch around us.

Is Ta'ameya takeaway or dine-in?

Both. All of our food comes in takeaway packaging, so you can grab it and go, but Spencer Lane has tables and seating if you would rather sit down. It is a fun, unique laneway in the middle of the city - grab a coffee from Spencer Coffee Bar next door and enjoy your falafel in the lane.

Can I order ahead or order online?

Yes. You can order online for pickup at taameya.square.site. Online ordering is open 11am to 12pm and 1pm to 2pm. We close it so that everyone in the laneway at peak time gets the same wait, whether they ordered online or in person.

How long does it take to get my lunch?

Typical wait time at Ta’ameya is around five minutes. During the lunch peak, 12pm to 1pm, it can get up to ten minutes. Everything is made fresh to order, so it is worth the wait.

10 questions

What is ta'ameya, and how is it different from falafel?

Ta’ameya is Egyptian falafel, made from fava beans rather than chickpeas. It is crunchy on the outside and fluffy and green on the inside, with a heavy hit of fresh herbs. Fava beans give it a different texture and flavour to the chickpea falafel most people know.

What is on the Ta'ameya menu?

The menu is built around our Egyptian falafel. You can get it in a pocket (half or full size) or in a bowl, both packed with our salads. Our two signature salads are the Cairo salad (pickles, onion, mint, tomato and parsley) and the Alexandria salad (olives, capsicum, dill, tomato and onion). For something sweet, try our pistachio tahini stuffed dates. We also make our own sauces and drinks. See our food.

Is Ta'ameya healthy?

Yes. Ta’ameya is a plant-based lunch made from fava beans, fresh herbs and vegetables, loaded with fresh salad. It is light, filling and energising, so you do not spend the afternoon feeling heavy. It is the kind of lunch you can eat every day.

Is Ta'ameya vegan?

Almost everything on the menu is vegan. Our falafel, pockets, bowls, salads, sauces and pistachio tahini stuffed dates are all vegan. The one exception is our honey lemon soda, which contains honey and is vegetarian but not vegan.

Is Ta'ameya vegetarian?

Yes. Every item on the menu is vegetarian.

Does Ta'ameya have gluten free options?

Yes. Our pockets are not gluten free because of the bread, but our bowl is. The bowl is built on millet, a gluten free ancient grain, with the same falafel, salads and sauces. Tell us at the counter and we will make sure your order is right.

Does Ta'ameya contain nuts?

Our pistachio tahini stuffed dates contain pistachios and almonds. The rest of the menu is not made with nuts, but everything is prepared in the same small kitchen, so let us know if you have a serious allergy and we will talk you through it.

Is Ta'ameya halal?

Yes. All of our food is halal.

Is the food spicy?

Not unless you want it to be. Our food is not spicy by default. We make our own hot sauce in house from pickled chillies - a medium heat that adds flavour as well as kick. Ask for it on your pocket or bowl, or take a bottle home.

Is everything made fresh?

Yes. Our falafel are cooked fresh to order, so they are hot and crunchy when you get them. We prepare our salads fresh on site every day.

About Ta'ameya

4 questions

What do customers say about Ta'ameya?

Ta'ameya is rated 4.9 stars on Google, with 189 reviews. People come back for the crunch, the flavour and how light they feel afterwards. A few from Google: “Honestly the best falafel in Queensland, easily. So much flavour and sauce, excellent vegan options.” “One of the best, most delicious healthy lunches I have had around the city. And so quick! Don't be fooled by the line.” “Even my husband, who normally doesn't eat falafel, loved it and left completely satisfied.” Read all our reviews on Google.

Who started Ta'ameya?

Ta'ameya was started by three friends from Brisbane - two engineers and a doctor - who had travelled together through Egypt. Two of the founders have Egyptian family heritage, so they knew how good falafel could be. The idea came on a road trip through Western Australia in 2021. Ta'ameya began at Brisbane's weekend markets in late 2021, opened the Spencer Lane pop-up in 2024, and is opening its first permanent store in the Brisbane CBD in 2027. Read the full story on our story page.

What makes Ta'ameya different from other falafel and Middle Eastern places in Brisbane?

Three things. First, it is Egyptian - fava bean falafel, Egyptian salads and Egyptian flavours, not the Lebanese or similar styles you find in most Brisbane falafel shops. Second, it is fast and light enough to be an everyday lunch, not an occasional treat. Third, we are building a sustainable food business without compromising on taste, quality or satisfaction. You should not have to settle in order to eat sustainably.

What is Egyptian food like?

Egyptian food is bold, herby and generous. It leans on fava beans, fresh herbs, pickles, tahini and bright salads rather than heavy sauces. Ta'ameya (fava bean falafel) is one of Egypt's most loved street foods, eaten for breakfast and lunch across Cairo and Alexandria. Our menu brings that straight to the Brisbane CBD.
